1st Degree Black Belt Requirements


ALL TESTING REQUIREMENTS MUST BE COMPLETED
FULLY AT LEAST 2 WEEKS PRIOR TO YOUR TESTING DATE

Basic Requirements:

  1. 8 active months (active means attending a least 4 classes per month)
  2. 50 classes at advanced belt classes or 70 mixed belt classes
  3. 20 teaching classes (additional to the above requirements)
  4. Test Fee:  $150.00 due on date of pretest completion
  5. You will receive:
    1. Your embroidered black belt with your name, date of test and school listed with your preference in English or Korean two weeks prior to the test date
    2. Plain black work out belt
    3. Middle weight black pants
    4. Assistant instructor patch. (You receive full instructor certification at completion of your second degree black belt test)
  6. You are eligible to wear a white top with black trim on completion of your black belt test.  This is optional and not part of your testing fee.
  7. Current prices for black trim top are approximately:
    1. Middle weight:  $28.00
    2. Heavy weight:  $45.00 plus

Thesis Requirements:

  1. You will be required to turn in a “thesis” on the following subjects: Please use your own words- do not plagiarize and most importantly list all sources!
  2. Option 1
    1. What Tae Kwon Do means and the history
    2. What Tae Kwon Do and Shim Mu Do has meant to you so far
    3. What your future plans and goals are in Shim Mu Do

OR

  1. Option 2
    1. Choose another topic and have it approved by Mr. Malone before you write your thesis
  1. Your thesis should be three pages, double spaced, standard margins
  2. Must be typed
  3. Include your typed 25 one steps on a separate page in your thesis

 

- Book must be read “How to Win Friends and Influence People” by Dale Carnegie. Must be able to answer some questions, pertaining to the some of the topics in the book.

Forms:  Poomse
Must know all forms from white to black belt and their meanings:

Basic One, Chungi, Dan-Gun, Do-San, Won-Hyo, Yul-Gok, Joong-Gun, Toi-Gye, Hwa-Rang, Choong-Moo,

  • Kwang-Gae, Is named after the famous Kwang-Gae-Toh-Wang, the 19th king of the Koguryo Dynasty, who regained all the lost territories including the greater party of Manchuria. The diagram (±) represents the expansion and recovery of lost territory. The 29 movements refer to the first two figures of 391 A.D., the year he came to throne.

Drills you’ll need to know for your testing

  1. 6 count inner outer forearm blocking drill
  2. Spinning back kick ducking drill
  3. Spinning back kick jamming drill
  4. 6 point blocking drill
  5. Jumping side kick drill

One Steps:  Han bon Kyroogi

  1. Have 25 typed, advanced techniques
  2. Advanced means, that Mr. Malone wants to see:
    1. Arm bars
    2. Wrist locks
    3. Choking
    4. Throwing
    5. Sweeping and controlling techniques
  3. Must be approved by Mr. Malone during pre-testing.
  4. All moves must be taught to you from our school prior to practice, otherwise an injury could occur to you or others

__ Kick for 45 seconds on the 4 pads shaped in a square, as powerful and fast as possible
