Martial Art tournaments will usually consist of three area's of competition:
Sparring-
Students will be competing against similar age and belt rank opponents. Earning 1 point for punches toward the head and chest and 2 points for kicks towards head and chest. Light contact is usually allowed only for the chest, not usually for head. However at a lower belt rank, a competitor does NOT need to make contact to the chest to earn points. Safety is usually a high priority at tournaments. All sparring gear: (head, hands, feet, mouth guard and cups for boys, must be worn.
Forms-
3 Black Belt Judges score the student by how well they perform their form. Judged on power, stability, overall technique, control, etc. Being that most schools teach their forms a little different, judges will not penalize a competitor for doing the form differently, as long as the techniques are done cleanly.
Weapons-
3 Black Belt Judges will score the student the same as forms, however all the competitors will be using a weapon. Different weapons will compete against each other.
